After one of my friends lamented the lack of an animated view of the changes in electoral votes over time, I created this animation from the images available at http://www.electoral-vote.com. This tiny hack is intended only as a supplement to the electoral-vote.com website and and wouldn't be possible without it!
Sat Aug 28 17:26:32 PDT 2004: I've added vertical bars showing the number of electoral votes held by each candidate to each frame of the animation. Thanks to Abe Singer for helping with the historical data. Some folks have been confused, so I also want to clarify that each colored US map with the number of electoral votes in each state comes from the http://www.electoral-vote.com website. I take the images, add some text (most notably the date) and the vertical bars showing the number of electoral votes, and then create the animation. This is much easier than paying attention to the poll data and making the maps to begin with. This site is intended only as a new way to view trends in the electoral-vote.com data.
Barring any technical difficulties, these pages should now refresh themselves every hour and the site itself should be updated by 8:30am PDT every day.
Mon Oct 4 14:10:49 PDT 2004: There was a brief outage manifesting itself as a missing month of september animation on the continuous time animation, as well as the missing October-only animations relating to the month changeover. All of the animations on the site should be working again. Apologies for any confusion that this has caused!
Update Mon Oct 11 12:42:32 PDT 2004: The long-awaited cartogram animation has finally arrived! Thanks to all who requested it. The cartogram images (scaled by available electoral votes) also come from the http://www.electoral-vote.com website. Thanks again to the electoral-vote.com votemaster for creating such an amazing site!
